07 April 2016

Starts: 13:00
Ends: 14:00

Kings in the North
Identifying Pictish Settlement in Northern Mainland Scotland

Inverness Museum, Room to Discover. Organised by Inverness Museum and Art Gallery

In this lecture, Beauly born and raised archaeologist, Daniel MacLean will explore how sites like Rhynie and Portmahomack have provided spectacular insights into high status Northern Pictish settlement, yet others have proved more elusive to discover. He will reveal his methodology for identifying settlement sites in the archaeological record.

Daniel’s exploration is centred on the Beauly and Moray Firths, areas which have until recently suffered from a lack of archaeological study. He will compare the archaeological, cropmark and documentary evidence at selected sites with the most recent scholarship to suggest the complex network of locations spanning prehistory to the eventual rise of the great Pictish kingdom of Fortriu.

Daniel has recently completed an MLitt Degree in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow and works as an archaeologist with AOC Archaeology Inverness, Rhynie Environs Archaeological Project and the Northern Picts Project.

£3.50 Booking is essential, in person at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery, call 01463 237114 or email cait.mccullagh@highlifehighland.org.uk
